What is IFTA?
What is IFTA?
IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is an agreement among 48 U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces that simplifies the reporting and payment of fuel taxes for commercial vehicles that operate across state or provincial borders.
Instead of paying taxes separately in each state, IFTA allows companies to:
Report all fuel purchased and all miles traveled in one quarterly report.
Pay or receive fuel tax credits based on the actual usage in each jurisdiction.
Who Needs to Register for IFTA?
You must register for IFTA if you operate:
A vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more
A vehicle with three or more axles
Any size vehicle if it transports hazardous materials or passengers for hire
And if the vehicle crosses state or provincial lines.
How Does IFTA Reporting Work?
Every quarter, you must file a detailed report showing:
Miles traveled per state or province
Fuel purchased and used per state or province
Based on this report, you will either pay the taxes owed or receive a refund if you overpaid.
Important:
Failing to file on time or making mistakes can lead to penalties, interest charges, and suspension of your IFTA license.
What Happens if You Don’t Comply with IFTA?
If you fail to register or properly file:
You could face heavy fines for each missed quarter.
Your IFTA license could be suspended or revoked.
Your interstate operations could be stopped at inspections.
